After months of waiting, Marvel Studios' WandaVision finally has a release date!
Fans have been waiting desperately for news about WandaVision's release date, as Disney+ perviously confirmed that the series was still on track to debut in late 2020. However, the release of a new motion poster has revealed that the series will begin airing its weekly episodes on January 15th, 2021, making 2020 the first year with no Marvel Studios content since 2009.
WandaVision was previously scheduled for spring 2021, as announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, before being moved up to December 2020. It looks like the series has returned to its original release timeframe, which was meant to lead up to the May 2021 premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which Scarlet Witch plays a key role.
While some fans may feel cheated, Disney+ delaying the release to January does make sense. The streaming service has barely any original content, and with the second season of The Mandalorian airing through December 18th, Pixar's Soul releasing on December 25th, and now the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series holiday special on December 11th, there wasn't any room left in December for WandaVision. In January, it will have space to breathe and dominate the conversation every week with less competition from Disney itself.
Personally, I'm disappointed that WandaVision isn't releasing in 2020 as expected. I was glad that we'd at least get one episode of a fantastic new Disney+ original series for the MCU this year, and I feel like there would have been room for WandaVision to start if The Mandalorian had begun airing a week or two earlier. Hopefully we get a second trailer soon to tide ourselves over!
WandaVision begins streaming exclusively on Disney+ on January 15th, 2021.
