'Spider-Man 3': Benedict Cumberbatch Reprising Role as Doctor Strange

Peter Parker will be getting an assist from the Sorcerer Supreme himself in Spider-Man 3.

Following in the footsteps of Tony Stark and Nick Fury, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange will be stepping into the role of Peter Parker's mentor in the untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Cumberbatch's inclusion ties into to the return of Jamie Foxx's Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, adding credence to the theory that Spider-Man 3 will deal with the multiverse and allow Electro to jump into this universe. With WandaVision set to fracture the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reality in just two months, it looks like Scarlet Witch's actions will ripple out across Spider-Man 3 and Loki before Doctor Strange steps in to repair her damage in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Speculation about the appearance of Kraven the Hunter and Norman Osborn continues, while scooper @DanielRPK on Twitter says that Kirsten Dunst and Dane DeHaan are set to reprise their roles as Mary Jane Watson and Green Goblin in future MCU projects. Fans are hoping for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to return as Peter Parker from their respective franchises, a possibility that seems more and more likely with each passing day. With the film also having to deal with the fallout of Mysterio revealing Peter Parker's identity to the world as well as rumors of the Sinister Six assembling, it looks like the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home is going to be much bigger than anyone expected.

I'm excited to see Doctor Strange team up with Spider-Man, and while I'm loving the multiversal aspects of this movie, I'm also concerned it's becoming a bit too big. Kraven hunting Peter around the world sounded like a cool concept, but when you add in Doctor Strange, the Sinister Six, Foxx's Electro, and the possibility of several other Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man actors returning as well, it sounds like the movie is trying to take on a little too much. I'm starting to wonder if there are any smaller movies in Phase Four at all, since it sounds like each one is going to be a gigantic event film on the level of Captain America: Civil War. I hope that some of these returning characters are being saved for Multiverse of Madness, since they're just said to be in "upcoming MCU projects". That being said, I do hope Strange's inclusion means that we'll see Scarlet Witch in this movie, even if it's just an end-credits cameo.
